Nearly 50 years after King's assassination, the notion that an organization like the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which was such a staunch opponent to the assertion of rights by Black citizens, can think a tweet can provide penance for its past evils is absurd. I believe King read the article - the first one in an issue on "Religion in America" - and that it helped shape his speech at Riverside.
But why is that so?
With the benefit of hindsight, we can clearly see King appealing to America to reach for the better angels of its nature. And we're going to fight for 15 in that city, as those workers are demanding $15 an hour in that city and are challenging the structures there legally and otherwise.
The Movement for Black Lives arose in protest against our criminal injustice system, in which blacks suffer both mass incarceration and too often violence from those who are supposed to protect them.
It was a few weeks ago that a white man traveled all the way from Baltimore to NY and killed Timothy Caughman simply because he was black.
Tuesday marked the 49 anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His popularity plummeted - as it probably would today if more people pondered the MLK of 1967 and 1968.

The threat of death at the hands of vigilante citizens against activists and even law enforcement is part of the complex landscape of black activism.
Most of us - conservative and liberal - would likewise tune out or mock King's insistence on loving our enemies. King was assassinated exactly one year later.
