The Black History and Culture Showcase (BHCS) features panel discussions, documentaries and workshops, but on the 70th anniversary of Jackie Robinson's integrating Major League Baseball the sports exhibit leans heavily toward No. 42.
Jackie Robinson was one of the players who transcended baseball. In 1997, Robinson's No. 42 was retired league-wide, but on Saturday, every player, coach, manager and umpire will wear it for the ninth straight year. Like most of her generation of African-Americans, baseball is not a "thing". "He would have wanted that very much", Sharon Robinson said. The statue depicts Robinson sliding into home, one of the iconic moments of his Hall of Fame career, and will be placed right outside reserve level entrances, along the left-field line of Dodger Stadium. Major League Baseball took notice years ago and invested millions of dollars in youth programs, and The Jackie Robinson Foundation also recognized the need.
I go back now to photos of Robinson, on that day in Cincinnati in the autumn of 1972.
Yankees DH Matt Holliday is playing against the Cardinals this weekend for the first time since ending his eight-year run with St. Louis. The world is a huge place with so many different people, and Jackie helped bring many of them together to enjoy this game we all love together.More news: Dave Chappelle and John Mayer remember Charlie Murphy

The legendary Jackie Robinson is getting a 10-foot tall bronze statue placed at Dodgers Stadium on Saturday (Apri 15).
So on this day - April 15, 2017 - we celebrate Jackie Robinson Day, and pay tribute to everything he accomplished and everything he stood for. My family watched every movie there was about Jackie Robinson. Rachel, who is 94 years old, has remained active in promoting Jackie's legacy along with their children Sharon, David, and Jackie Jr.
Despite the inauspicious debut, Robinson would play in 151 games.
