New Girl is getting a proper goodbye.

Fox has renewed New Girl for a seventh season, which will be the comedy's final one. For example, since 2011, Nick Miller actor Jake Johnson has turned in memorable performances in Jurassic World and Let's Be Cops; additionally, he'll be popping up alongside Tom Cruise in The Mummy later this year. "Together with Jess' best friend, Cece, they bond to form an unlikely, and dysfunctional, family".

According to a source who spoke to Variety, the final season of New Girl will be shortened to just eight episodes with the story being wrapped up for good by the end. He also gave a shoutout to all the mothers out there, wishing them a happy Mother's Day, since the New Girl news broke on the same day. The Season 6 finale in April likely could have served as a series finale had it gone that way, but the show will get to play out what comes after the events of the finale next season. "But we shot a finale where, if this was the end, the core fan base would be OK", Johnson explained. Fox alone has cut such single-season shows as Pitch, APB, Son of Zorn and Making History; it has yet to announce the fates of 24: Legacy, Wayward Pines and more.

"Let's be clear. I have no idea if NG is coming back".

But next season is definitively billed as the final round for the trend-setting series. "The truth is we really, really don't know what the answer is", he said.
