Red Sox officially activate David Price for season debut

If only the third inning of David Price's 2017 debut could've been as productive as the other four he pitched Monday afternoon on the road against the Chicago White Sox.

Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts, Mitch Moreland and Jackie Bradley Jr. also went deep.

Red Sox manager John Farrell is ecstatic to have Sale on his team this time around in Chicago. He entered Tuesday's big-time pitching matchup against former teammate Jose Quintana with a 2.34 ERA and a league-leading 101 strikeouts. Despite that, he was in line for the win when he left the game, with the Red Sox up 4-3 on the Chicago White Sox.

"I wasn't smiling a whole lot tonight, that's for sure", Sale sad after the game, via CSNNE.com. Despite Monday's hitless performance, he is hitting.296 with 10 home runs and 28 RBIs in 49 games this season. He struck out six and walked two in eight relief appearances after the White Sox purchased his contract from Triple-A Charlotte on May 4.

Bogaerts added a solo homer in the eighth and finished with four of Boston's 16 hits.

ST. LOUIS - Los Angeles scored four runs in the third inning, three in the fifth and two in the ninth to erase an early three-run deficit en route to its sixth consecutive victory.

Like a transfer student from a rough-and-tumble high school, Sale was grateful for the lessons learned at the School of Hard Sox. The M's turned four double plays behind him in the first four innings. The lanky left-hander is 5-2 with a 2.34 ERA as he prepares for his 11th start.

It isn't a stretch to say Marrero has been one of the worst hitters in professional baseball over the past two years. But Sale blamed his rough outing on a lack of command, not the conditions. He threw 89 pitches in 3 2/3 innings in his last outing.

"We're just going to have to keep grinding it out", manager Rick Renteria said. "It's not the stuff". It's the command and the execution. "And right equal to that is two home runs by Deven Marrero".

The Mariners jumped on Rockies lefty Tyler Anderson (3-5).

Marlins 7, Phillies 2: Giancarlo Stanton hit his third homer since moving into the No. 2 spot in the batting order, and Miami won its third game in a row.

The game was going into the top of the eighth inning at SVM's press deadline.

But the fiery Sale clashed with White Sox management at times, including a five-day suspension previous year for taking scissors to throwback uniforms he said were uncomfortable. He was visited by a trainer but continued the at-bat and reached on an infield single before being lifted for pinch runner Willy Garcia.

Since leaving the White Sox in this past offseason's blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox, Sale has been one of the best pitchers - if not the best pitcher - in the American League. The fiery Sale clashed with management at times and drew a five-day suspension from the team past year for cutting up throwback uniforms he thought were uncomfortable. "I think we're ready to go on a rehab assignment here soon", he said. With the departure of David Ortiz, the production in this category was likely to dip, but I don't think anyone expected this few of balls traveling over the outfield wall. Then he gets hurt in Spring Training, visits the grim reaper of baseball and somehow manages to miss only the first two months of the season.

RHP James Shields (strained right lat) said Monday that he expects to start a minor-league rehabilitation assignment as soon as this week.
