Joey Chestnut is a BEAST because he ate like one. scarfing down a record 72 HOT DOGS to win his second straight Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Or zero. But when you're Joey Chestnut and you're going for a record-breaking 10th Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest title, health isn't on the top of your mind.

Joey Chestnut admits that a year ago was a really rough round for him as he attempted to regain the title.

About 1,000 people attended the annual Fourth of July event.

Meanwhile, the women's side has featured a yearslong rivalry between Sudo and record-holder Sonya "The Black Widow" Thomas, of Alexandria, Virginia.

Chestnut restored the order he had established for most of the past 10 years when he took back the title belt in 2016 by devouring 70 hot dogs and buns.

Chestnut was able to consume 72 hot dogs in less than ten minutes to take home the coveted Mustard Belt.

"I slowed down quite bit", he said. Now that he has won two years in a row, he hopes to maintain his streak.

This hotdog eating contest takes place under the purview of major league eating - yes, that is really a thing.

The owner of the Coney Island stand, Nathan Handwerker, overheard four immigrants arguing over who was more patriotic.

The current incarnation of Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest began in 1972 during an Independence Day celebration.

However, Thomas - who won in 2011, 2012 and 2014 before falling to Sudo in 2014 - still holds the women's record, at 45 franks.

10-time champion Joey "Jaws" Chestnut defended his title Tuesday at the showdown on the Coney Island boardwalk.
