Orlando hospitals improve rank in US News Best Hospitals report


UT Medical was beat out for best in the state by nationally ranked Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

U.S. News is just one of many organizations producing reports meant to hold health care organizations accountable and help consumers make wise choices.

Johns Hopkins Hospital moved up to third from fourth in the latest rankings of American hospitals by U.S. News and World Report, but fell short of reclaiming the top spot it once held for 22 years.

The report used data from almost 5,000 medical centers and analyzed survey responses from more than 30,000 physicians to rank the hospitals in 16 adult specialties from cancer to urology. This year, Mayo officials also celebrated out west as the Phoenix campus finished No. 20 in a report that examined more than 4,500 medical centers across the country.

Penn Medicine Chester County Hospital ranked eighth statewide, recognized as high-performing in four procedures or conditions.

The Clinic had five specialties ranked in the top five nationwide, including cardiology/heart surgery, diabetes/endocrinology, gastroenterology/GI surgery, geriatrics, gynecology, nephrology, orthopedics, pulmonology; rheumatology; and urology. U.S. News evaluates data on almost 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult specialties, nine adult procedures and conditions, and 10 pediatric specialties.

The publication also produced a list of the 535 best hospitals in major regions, with rankings based upon performance in both complex and common care in each state and metro area.

The U.S. News rankings compared more than 4,500 medical centers in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. "To be recognized among the nation's best hospitals truly reflects the innovation and quality care that Mount Sinai provides".

The hospital did not rank nationally in any category and was rated "average" for most adult procedures and conditions.

"Our specialty rankings focus on identifying hospitals that excel in caring for especially sick or challenging patients", he wrote in an email.

"We view the facility as a net positive for the strength of our programs", he said. Dr. Jon Sweetenham, senior director for clinical affairs at the institute, said the center's reach likely played a big role in its high ranking.

Medicare released its first overall hospital quality rating in August 2016. In addition, the rankings used information on death rates for patients who represent especially challenging cases and patient safety.

The "America's Best Hospitals" issue is compiled using data collected annually on more than 5,000 USA hospitals of varying sizes.
