DACA's Disappearance Could Spell Trouble for NDSU Students

"I'm anxious about losing the House now because of this - because of DACA", Steve Bannon said in a prerecorded interview to be broadcast in full Sunday on CBS's "60 Minutes", referring to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. DACA holders are law abiding residents who contribute to the US society and economy.

DACA recipients whose permits expire in the next six months have until October 5 to apply for a two-year renewal. "They don't drink, they don't do drugs, they don't do anything but work". We pledge to continue with this support and to look for ways of offering resources in case a change of immigration policy leads to a loss of status that invalidates our students' ability to work or collect financial aid. Trump said his decision would include a six-month delay so Congress can codify the program into law, and he has threatened to revisit his decision if lawmakers fail to act.

On immigration, Trump is navigating politically tricky waters.

President Donald Trump meets with, from left, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other Congressional leaders in the Oval Office of the White House, Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017, in Washington.

"I have always believed DACA was a presidential overreach", said Graham in a press release.

City business leaders voiced concern on Friday about the dismantling of a program protecting hundreds of thousands of immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children, saying that in addition to uprooting members of the community, it could cost the state millions in economic output. "They want to stay in this country for as long as they can, so two years of security isn't really enough for them".

"There is 900 of these Dreamers that are serving in uniform in the United States military", he said.

Although Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery III was one of the ten attorney generals to push for Trump to end DACA, he chose to step back from the suit right before Trump made his decision, citing a human element as the cause. That's ill-advised. The Post's David Nakamura made that divide obvious in a response to the president's tweet, writing, "DHS official says if your DACA status is set to expire by March 5 and you fail to renew by Oct 5, you expose yourself to potential action". The dilemma over what to do with children brought into the United States by their illegal-immigrant parents, the so-called "Dreamers", is Exhibit A. They stand illegally on American soil in the impassive eyes of the law, but they're already American in their hearts.

Kari Alldredge, vice provost for the Division of Enrollment Management, said that citizenship is a factor for making financial aid decisions for students, including undocumented students.

"These kids don't - for the most part, don't know any other home than the United States", Ryan said on September 6. He gave Congress six months to come up with an alternative.

Being deported "would mean going back to a place I haven't been for over half of my life", Rodriguez said.
