Malaysia go down fighting to India in Asia Cup final

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated the Indian hockey team for winning the Asia Cup 2017.

The defeat knocked Pakistan out of the final race and India will now play either Korea or Malaysia in the final.

All in all, a very satisfying victory for India who can focus their energies on the finals of the Asia Cup as they aim to add another major trophy to the cabinet. India started off the finals in dream fashion as Ramandeep found the back of the net in the first five minutes of the first quarter.

The national players were placed in a tight spot in the third minute itself, when Ramandeep Singh scored the opening goal, and the ghost of the 6-2 drubbing in the round robin soon emerged.

Harmanpreet hit the cross bar off India's second penalty corner as both teams failed to break the deadlock at half-time.

For Malaysia, it was their best result in the tournament. Shahril Saabah scored a late goal for his side in the 50th minute to give them some hope. However, Malaysia held on and created some chances of their own as the Indian defence stood tall to deny Malaysia of any real opportunities to score.

This was India's third continental title. "We are enjoying [the moment], also it is Satbir Singh, one of our teammate's birthday today - and it's a sweet win to mark his birthday too".

"That team was China, who take the ticket to Bhubaneswar, India courtesy of their eighth place finish in the World League Semi-Final in London", FIH said in a statement. "It was a close contest and I am happy how they played".
