Razer announces its first Razer Phone for gamers

Razer's first smartphone sticks to what the company knows best: gaming. But it's historically been the case gamers care less about whether SSAO is implemented in a tiny smartphone screen, and more about whether they can play Angry Birds, Flappy Bird, or Minecraft. The device will receive Android 8 in 2018.

Continuing with its specialisation into gaming hardware, the company has designed a new phone priced at $700, which will be best suited for video games. "We spent an insane amount of money", said Mr Tan. If you live in the USA, you will be able to purchase it from Microsoft stores as well.

The Razer Phone will retail for US$699.99 (S$950), with the first wave of countries, such as the United States and select Europe markets, getting it on Nov 17.

Why on earth would anybody need a 120Hz mobile phone display? However, Razer hasn't given estimates on battery life duration for any type of conditions, although the Game Booster app will let users tinker power and performance of the phone. Such display feature is important for a gaming gadget, given that it promotes smoother game run and minimizes lag. The operating system is Android Nougat, with Razer noting that the phone will get the Android Oreo upgrade next year.

Gamers, in particular, covet higher refresh rates (and the accompanying frame rate) because it means they see more of the game and are less likely to miss a key punch or flying laser beam. For audio, the handset is listed to come with Dolby Atmos sound and packs dual front-facing speakers and amplifiers which is certified by THX.

"The future of gaming is rapidly expanding to mobile devices, and both Razer and Tencent are at the forefront of fast-tracking development", said Vincent Gao, global marketing director at Tencent Games.

Of course, as with all rumours and leaks, we advise readers to take the above information about the Razer Phone with a pinch of salt, as Razer has yet to make any announcement about its new smartphone and the online listing can not be independently verified. The high-end phone also features a 4000mAh battery, and 64GB expandable internal storage. The Razer Phone itself is housed in an aluminum chassis, and measures in at 6.2 x 3.1 x 0.3 inches and weighs 197 grams / 6.9 ounces.
