Landon Collins Apologizes For Calling Giants Teammate Eli Apple 'A Cancer'

The New York Giants have seen a whole lot of weirdness this season, including the benching of Eli Manning leading to widespread outrage and eventually the firing of head coach Ben McAdoo and general manager Jerry Reese. They play hard. They love what they do.

Heading into the predraft process in 2016, few doubted Apple's physical tools and raw talent, but there were concerns about his need for refinement, both as a player and in terms of maturity. Apple has had a rough season from start to finish this season, spending several weeks on the bench after dealing with a family matter. Teammates are supposed to work together and stand up for one another no matter the circumstances; given Collins' comments, his relationship with Apple is more indicative of that between enemies than between teammates or friends. His lack of on-field production has been frustrating, but that pales in comparison to what his off-field behavior has done to his chances of living up to the high expectations of being a top-10 draft pick.

An report over the weekend detailed personal issues as the forefront for an explanation on Apple's attitude and season - which includes a falling out with his stepfather. He's dealt with a hip injury and had a reported blow-up at coaches during a critical film session. He's got a lot going on with the situation. "Just want him to know I'm always here for him". You're our brother.' We have to go to practice with him, and we need him to be here.

Of course, the last time Collins said he had met with Apple - on December 13 - the conversations were denied by Apple the following day.

When approached at his locker after the game and asked why he only played 7 snaps (all on special teams), Apple said: "It was a coach's decision. I guess he don't remember things", Collins said.

"Is that what he said?"

But this wasn't the first time Collins has publicly criticized Apple. I know I have, and I know what I did.

As a first-round draft choice, Apple's $15,152,320 contract is fully guaranteed and has two more seasons on it.
