The Twitter account, run by her family and friends since she became ill, asked that she be remembered as a mother, daughter, sister and aunt with a heart "bigger than the world".

Erica was hospitalized at Woodhull Hospital in Brooklyn for the past week and was surrounded by friends and family who owned dire hopes for her recovery.

"The only thing I can say is that she was a warrior", Erica's mother Esaw Snipes told the New York Times on Saturday.

Erica Garner, an activist and the oldest daughter of a New York City man who was killed by a police chokehold, died Saturday, according to a statement posted on her official Twitter account.

Ms Garner became a prominent activist in the years since, advocating for the safety of the black community and others from police brutality.

A message posted on her Twitter account said she had brain damage "from lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest".

Doctors said the delivery put stress on her already enlarged heart.

Her father's death was one of the first major police brutality cases that brought attention to the issue.

Garner's wife eventually settled with the city for approximately $1M and made a decision to remain in the same public housing she had been living in before his killing.

"She passed away this morning".

Garner became a civil rights activist after video of her father's chokehold death at the hands of a NY police officer went viral and his final words "I can't breathe" became a rallying cry for police reform activists. "May you find the peace in the next life that you deserved while you were here", family members said in a tweet. She was a real activist, she was always involved.

Protesters converged on busy streets, blocking traffic, and staged die-ins, carried mock coffins and chanted "I can't breathe" - Garner's last words before he died. "The police are killing our people - that's reason enough not to fight amongst ourselves", she wrote.

"It's just sad to see her laying there and not the active Erica that we know", Sharpton said. Donovan was the distict attorney when a grand jury declined to indict Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo in connection with her father's death. "What do you want from marching?' He was my father", Garner told NBC News in 2015.

Erica Garner was also apublic supporter of Vermont Sen.
