The 24-year-old came extremely close to a move during the summer transfer window, with Chelsea the main horse in the race.

The England midfielder, who have just six months left of his current Toffees deal though he's not featured for Everton all season, recently returned to training with the first team and has played in a behind closed doors friendly.

The England worldwide claimed he wanted a new challenge and there was reported interest in him from Tottenham Hotspur as well as the reigning Premier League champions.

Tottenham have been monitoring Barkley's situation but Sky Sports suggest the North Londoners have made a decision to end their interest with Mauricio Pochettino now looking at alternative targets.

The two clubs agreed a £35m fee and Barkley personal terms with the Premier League champions in August, only to request more time to consider the deal as he recovered from a serious hamstring injury.

But Chelsea were happy to pay to secure his services in January, with Antonio Conte enthused by Barkley's potential.

"I would expect there would be [an offer] sometime in this window if there's going to be interest from one of the big boys", the Everton boss told a news conference ahead of Friday's match away to local rivals Liverpool in the third round of the FA Cup.

Some of the Everton fans who were disappointed in his decision not to sign a new contract previous year will likely be happy to see him leave.
