AAA Reports Gas Prices Up Five Cents

AAA warns consumers to anticipate prices to be on the rise as weather warms up due to hurricanes affecting refineries maintenance.

Chattanooga gas prices on Sunday were 7.7 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year ago and 48 cents per gallon more than two years ago.

The average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline is $2.48, AAA found, up five cents from last week's survey and 19 cents higher than the $2.29 per gallon average this week past year.

"As unseasonable cold finally breaks across the country, what may not break as quickly is the unseasonably high gas prices", said Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.

In Rhode Island, gas is four cents above the national average of $2.49, while gas prices are a penny less than the national average in MA.

Nationally over the last month, average prices went up 1.7 cents per gallon. West Texas Intermediate crude settled at a four-year high above $62 a barrel last week as global supply levels tightened.

The national average price for regular unleaded was $2.49, AAA said, down a half-cent over the week. Five years ago, a gallon was fetching $3.39.

Gas prices held steady during the first week of 2018 in Southwest Florida, and analysts say drivers can expect to see a seasonal slide in what they pay at the pump.
