UFC 220: Stipe Miocic defends heavyweight title with victory over Francis Ngannou

The main event witnessed perhaps the most exciting opening round in UFC heavyweight championship history, with both Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou landing big shots and the champion landing three takedowns.

Still, it's these cards, the ones that fly under the radar, that deliver.

Ngannou has taken MMA by storm, winning his first five fights via stoppage - four by KO in the first round.

"It feels good", Miocic told WKYC.com in an exclusive interview following his UFC record third consecutive defense of the heavyweight championship.

Though that wasn't quite enough to claim the top-grossing UFC in all their trips to Boston, it was the most-attended event ever in Bean Town, even drawing better than lightweight champion Conor McGregor's 2015 headlining bout. Cormier is a minus-350 (risking $3.50 to win $1) favorite, with Oezdemir coming back at plus-270 (risking $1 to win $2.70). For the first time in two years, the UFC returned to Boston with UFC 220.

An onslaught of short right hands from Cormier and Oezdemir is trapped and has no answer for this, so the referee rightly steps in and ends the fight at the two minute mark, handing Cormier a TKO Victory to retain his title.

Stipe Miocic stood on the tracks when the train came through and did not budge. Cormier secured another takedown early in Round 2 and had Oezdemir in the mounted crucifix, rendering him completely defenseless. But Cormier pinned Oezdemir against the canvas early in the second and finished him off with a series of shots to the face.

"I've lost twice to Jon Jones and I said as I came into this fight I felt as though I was fighting for a vacant title tonight, because he beat me last time". Nurmagomedov is set to fight Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title at UFC 223 in NY.

Jones would go on to be flagged by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency for a failed drug test. Stipe kept his weight on Ngannou, grinding him out and dragging him back to the mat. It wouldn't be surprising to see the UFC try to set up a much anticipated fight between Miocic and former champion Cain Velasquez. Khabib Nurmagomedov was in Makhachev's corner and pounded a wall in celebration of his fellow Russian fighter's victory on Saturday night. Ngannou had also been impressive, with every one of his six UFC fights ending with a finish in his favor.

Abdul Razak Alhassan caught Sabah Homasi flush with a right uppercut in the first round for one of the more spectacular knockouts in recent UFC history to win a welterweight bout at UFC 220 on Saturday night. Left hand for Oezdemir. Nurmagomedov is set to fight Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title at UFC 223 in NY.
