White House defends handling of Rob Porter allegations, amid criticism

President Trump's trusted communications director was photographed leaving her apartment last month in the company of Rob Porter, who resigned under pressure Wednesday after his two ex-wives alleged that he beat them.

Porter's first wife, Colbie Holderness, said in an interview with The Post that he was continually abusive during their marriage.

According to United States media reports, Mr Porter has recently been romantically linked with White House communications director Hope Hicks. "When he heard me give my name and address to the 9-1-1 dispatcher, he drove off", Willoughby said in her complaint. He claimed late Wednesday night that he was "shocked" by the allegations - which the White House had known about generally since late previous year - and added, "There is no place for domestic violence in our society".

"He became fully aware of these allegations yesterday", Shah said of Kelly, later adding that he had "not seen images prior to the statement on Tuesday night".

Mr Porter rejected the allegations in a statement read by the White House press secretary on Wednesday.

"In this and many, many other areas, it appears that the Oversight Committee has constructed a wall around the White House in order to prevent any credible oversight whatsoever", he wrote. Talking about his resignation, he has said that he "will seek to ensure a smooth transition when he leaves the White House". "I think it was a personal decision that Rob made and one that he was not pressured to do", Sanders said after reading a statement where Porter denied his ex-wives claims.

Rob Porter will leave his position as White House staff secretary as early as Thursday after his ex-wives went public with their claims - which they each told the Federal Bureau of Investigation about during the official's background check before taking the government job.

But after the photo of Holderness with the blackened eye became public, Kelly accepted Porter's resignation, although no date was set for his departure from the White House.

Hicks and Porter aren't the only couple in the Trump White House, as Business Insider's Kate Taylor reported.

Porter not only controlled the flow of information onto Trump's desk, but as a lawyer, he also helped vet the mountain of documents that require the President's signature.

"It's ultimately their determination at the White House whether they want to grant a permanent clearance", said former Federal Bureau of Investigation assistant director Ron Hosko. I can't say enough good things about him.

Several White House aides said Wednesday that Kelly's statement was a mistake. He nearly always accompanies the president when he travels, and frequently can be seen near Trump as he boards Marine One and Air Force One.

Porter attended Harvard at the same time as Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner and previously worked in the offices of Republican Senators Mike Lee, Rob Portman, and Orrin Hatch.
