Gotta hand it to Vonn: US ski star wears gloves at Olympics

Olympic gold medalist Lindsey Vonn is on her way to South Korea for the Winter Olympics, but only after encountering a series of delays.

"I know, like, it's a comparison between sports, and I don't think there's a sport in the Winter Olympics where you can even win 23 medals across three or four Olympics, but, yeah, I could never imagine myself even in the same sentence as Michael Phelps", she said.

Vonn's only regret is that her grandfather, Don Kildow, won't be able to watch her compete in the country in which he served in the USA military.

"I really hoped he'd have been alive to see me, but I know he's watching and I know he's going to help me, and I'm going to win for him".

It's too bad for Vonn that a knee injury kept her out of the 2014 games, and she's said this will be final one.

Vonn confirmed she felt "really good", but added: "It's not really about me or my career, it's about my grandfather".

Ever the prolific tweeter, Vonn also included a play-by-play of her experience on the delayed flight, telling her followers that she caught a man next to her discreetly trying to take a selfie with her when his camera flash accidentally gave him away. "I miss him so much".

Mikaela Shiffrin is rested and ready to bounce back from the uncharacteristic slump that marked her lead up to the Pyeongchang Olympics, where she is a favorite to win multiple medals in alpine skiing.

"And I think that I needed to change something". Being in a hotel room is often times is just extremely hard. "Last weekend was just the icing on the cake".

"If it's more windy than today, the gondola is not going to run so then we have a major problem for everybody and it's not going to happen". Now, one more time, she encounters a different set of circumstances. "I know what I'm capable of, and I think I know how to handle myself better than I did". I got her a year and a half ago.

Vonn - who has snubbed an invite to the White House and says she is representing her "country but not her president" - has won an all-time women's record of 81 World Cup races and has consistently asked to compete in a men's event.

"I would like to compete in everything", she said.

Austria's defending Olympic champion Matthias Mayer said the course was "much easier" than the icy challenge that was the downhill in Sochi. She enjoys sleeping the majority of the day. As he raised his family on a farm in rural Milton, Wisconsin, he built a tiny ski hill with a tow rope. "I was questioning whether I was going to bring her here because it was a long trip, but she's always with me so I figured I need her for the most important event".

Vonn said her increased mental strength really comes into play when she's in the starting gate.

"I'm of Norwegian descent and so I feel like I'm pseudo team member of the Norwegian team".
