Around five hours after Poellnitz's body was found, the standoff ended, with Hollie dead.
Reports said the when police went to his home in the city's Toulminville district, Mr Hollie, barricaded himself inside and started firing at officers.
Justin Billa had joined the force in January 2016 and won Officer of the Month in June 2016
"She tells me she loves me everyday before I leave for work and I make sure to do the same", he said.
Billa joined the force in January 2016. The victim of the case, Fonda Poellnitz, was found dead in the middle of the West Ridge Road in Mobile. He was named the department's officer of the month that June, winning a commendation for investigating complaints of robberies committed by a man whom he later arrested.
In a 2016 interview with Fox-affiliated WALA-TV, Billa talked about his idea of policing and reducing the rate of crimes in the community.
Back at the home where Poellnitz lived, her daughter Octavia Poellnitz stood in the street crying, confused about what had just happened to her mother.
