Russian Federation is banned from competing at the Games because of state-sponsored doping but the International Olympic Committee announced on Sunday that their Olympic ban will be lifted if there are no more doping violations from their athletes at Pyeongchang 2018.

It was the first time since the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) team triumphed at Albertville 1992 that a team from Russian Federation had won the Olympic title.

The team was barred from using Russian flags or having its national anthem played because of International Olympic Committee sanctions for state-sponsored doping. Constantly saying it doesn't matter that they had to wear nondescript red and white uniforms that lacked the Russian Coat of Arms, players gave the Russians their second gold and 17th total medal of the Olympics.

Nikita Gusev scored with 55 seconds left before the period ended to send the game into overtime. 10 seconds later, Dominik Kahun finished off a Frank Mauer pass in the low slot following a great Germany forecheck to tie it at 2.

This might be an unpopular opinion to hold, but I'm actually very happy that Russian Federation won the gold medal.

After Germany took a 3-2 lead, Russian Federation then had to kill a penalty and knotted it again at 3-3 on Gusev's second goal.

"But we all thought (before) that we would be sitting on the couch at home having a beer and watching the final on television". We got embarrassed on the global state.

"It's a little tough right now because we all felt we could have won that game, but that's hockey, that's just the way it is", German coach Marco Sturm said.

Away from the politics, humanity's most extraordinary feats of winter athletic prowess unfolded, revealing the expected triumphs but also stars most unlikely - from favorites like Mikaela Shiffrin, Shaun White and Lindsey Vonn to sudden surprise legends like Czech skier-snowboarder Ester Ledecka and the medal-grabbing "Garlic Girls", South Korea's hometown curling favorites.

Friedrich's gold follows his victory in the two-man event, making him only the second man to win in both disciplines in the past 30 years.

It wasn't quite the happy ending that Germany was likely hoping for after their momentous upset of Canada, but a silver medal is a fine result for a country that doesn't have a proud tradition of winning hockey.
