Trump asserted that South Korean President Moon Jae-in "has been very generous that without us and without me in particular, I guess, you would have to say, that they wouldn't be discussing anything" with the North.
The meeting between Kim and Moon will only be the third summit between the rivals since the end of the 1950-53 Korean War and could prove to be significant in the global diplomatic push to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis.
"With the inter-Korean summit, as well as the ensuing summit between North Korea and the USA, expectations are growing that the 65-year-long confrontation and struggle will end and a new era of peace will come", the statement read. "I do not think there is any difference in the concept", he said.
Mr Kim is also expected to hold a summit with US President Donald Trump by June.

The agreement on a new hotline, the first of its kind connecting the leaders of the two Koreas, came in early March when Moon's top security adviser Chung Eui-yong travelled to Pyongyang for an unprecedented meeting with the North Korean leader.
The new body includes the country's most powerful individuals in state, military and party affairs and is seen as crucial for Kim to consolidate his power and centralize governance.

For months, North Korea's missile tests have raised concerns around the world and helped escalate a risky slinging of insults between Kim and Trump. If this whole exercise will attain its objective of peace in Korea, the Don will have an ace in his sleeve come next U.S. presidential election.
But tensions have eased in recent months, with the North taking part in the Winter Olympics in the South in February and an exchange of threats of war with the United States evaporating.
Americans - not to mention hundreds of millions of South Koreans, Japanese and others in Asia - are anxious about Kim's military buildup.
The announcement was made by the state news agency KCNA early on Saturday morning, the day after a hotline between the leaders of North and South Koreawent live.
He is the most senior US official to meet with a North Korean leader since Secretary of State Madeleine Albright met with Kim's father in Pyongyang in 2000.
However, in the burgeoning spirit of openness and diplomacy, Moon said Kim is willing to give up United States troops' removal as a precondition for discussions over denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula.
