Microsoft has officially made available the Windows 10 April Update today, with a broader rollout to start on May 8th. You don't have to do anything to get the update; it will roll out automatically to you through Windows Update if you've chosen to have updates installed automatically on your device.

Microsoft believes Delivery Optimisation can reduce data usage for updates by as much as 90 percent, and provides the Windows Analytics dashboard to monitor the new feature in the April 2018 update. The April 2018 Update is the fourth major update, preceded by the Fall Creators Update (Redstone 3), Creators Update (Redstone 2), and Anniversary Update (Redstone 1). Also, the April 2018 Update comes with an AirDrop-like wireless file sharing feature called Near Share.

Named Focus Assist, users can switch off notiications from - for example - email programs and social media apps during working hours to minimise the amount of distractions they might encounter. If this is the case, you can instead try "forcing" the update to your PC early by heading to Microsoft's Windows 10 Download page and pressing "Update Now" to download the installer.

This feature is also a boon for those Windows users who spread their work across Android and iOS smartphones and tablets (which is to say, everyone except the dozen Windows Phone users out there), as the Edge browser and Android launcher allow you to sync activity from those devices as well.

Microsoft's trying to excite end-users with a new feature called "Focus Assist" created to help you "get things done without distractions, like social media or other notifications". You can enable the feature when necessary or set up for specific times when you want to particularly keep the constant notifications at bay, and revisit them later. Additionally, people can hold the Windows button and tap the trigger of a motion controller to more easily take digital photos within their VR games.

Microsoft's Edge browsercan now remove extraneous elements when printing from a website and can mute audio from designated tabs. Also new is the ability to save your address and payment preferences to make filling out payment forms easier (something Chrome and others have long done), as well as the ability to print clutter-free versions of articles you are reading on the web. But the worst thing about Windows updates - even ones that happen in the background - is that they tend to slow down your machine while they're being downloaded.
