Red Sox letting Ramirez go

The 34-year-old Pedroia, a four-time All-Star, had been Boston's opening day second baseman every year from 2007-17.

Slashing.333/.392/.486, Holt is projected for 3 home runs and a.235 average the rest of the year. But the victory and his return to the lineup left him in good spirits after the game.

The Red Sox will have seven days to either trade or release the 34-year-old Ramirez. Though Dombrowski says he was surprised to hear that recommendation from the rookie skipper, and noted that he had been "prepared to go in a different direction", the veteran baseball ops executive elected to cut ties with the highly paid Ramirez.

Less than two weeks ago, Ramirez hit the eventual game-winning homer in a 5-2 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The Red Sox are obligated to pay Ramirez the remaining $15 million on the four-year deal he signed as a free agent prior to the 2015 season. The Astros are the defending World Series Champs and I could see Hanley joining them, which could come back to hurt the Red Sox.

However, Ramirez carries a $22 million option for 2019 that automatically vests if he reaches 497 plate appearances this season, per Spotrac.

Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said Ramirez's vesting option did not factor into the Red Sox's decision. The Red Sox are trying to establish on record that they made the move for baseball reasons and not financial.

"He's been OK" at first base, said Dombrowski, but "he's not been Mitch Moreland, as far as that is concerned".

Cora and Dombrowski were diplomatic in saying it, but both returned to the idea that coming off the bench wasn't the best role for Ramirez.

Could the Twins be interested in Hanley Ramirez? First and foremost, Ramirez hadn't been doing badly this season. Riley Williams III restored cartilage, and the Red Sox said then he was expected to miss more than the first month of the season.

Sandoval would play just three games in 2016 after injuring his shoulder. I'm excited about it.

With Dustin Pedroia activated yesterday, conventional wisdom said Blake Swihart would be the corresponding roster move, not Hanley Ramirez. I was like, 'That worked.' For him to come in to come in and catch a knuckleballer after not catching since Fort Myers or whenever the last time he caught, that caught my eye.

Ramirez finishes the Boston portion of his season with an 88 OPS+, but that number belies the highs and lows he's experienced.
