This year's G7 summit comes at a time, when leaders of seven major economies view the current worldwide order as a historic division between Washington and its major allies in North America, Europe and Asia.

Trudeau, UK Prime Minister Theresa May, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron all oppose Trump's trade policies, and along with Mexico vowed to impose retaliatory tariffs on USA goods.

Russian Federation was removed from the G-8, or Group of Eight, in 2014 following the occupation and annexation of Crimea from Ukraine.

At last year's G7 summit in Sicily, the leaders all signed a communique, but the statement made clear there were deep differences on the Paris climate change accord.

Some foreign policy experts said Mr. Trump had a point about bringing Russian Federation back to the table with the Group of 7.

As the Eastern leaders meet in China, the G-7 summit, which brings together the U.S., Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Japan, is taking place in Montreal.

In the days leading up to the summit, Trudeau and Macron have severely criticized Trump's new tariffs, which critics say threaten to drive up prices for American consumers and companies and heighten uncertainty for businesses and investors around the globe.

"If it doesn't happen, we come out even better!" the president wrote on Twitter, hours before his arrival in Quebec.

In Paris, Macron's office said it wouldn't make sense and pointed out that the latest country to impose economic sanctions on Russian Federation was the US Italy's new premier, Giuseppe Conte, tweeted that he agreed with Trump, saying: "Russia should go back into the G-8".

Mr Trump is due to leave early on Saturday to head to Singapore for a landmark meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
