Central Colorado wildfire likely human-caused

Meanwhile, additional firefighters were headed to Wyoming to work on a wildfire that has exploded in size and prompted evacuations near the Colorado border. Springtime predictions of a wild summer of blazes across the state appear to be proving themselves true - and with a fervor.

Another day of hot, dry and windy weather is expected in southern Wyoming, where a wildfire has been burning virtually unabated this week.

Another wildfire is being fought in Colorado, this time near the town of Silverthorne along the busy Interstate 70 corridor.

The 416 Fire - named after its emergency service call number - is by far the largest of at least a half-dozen blazes raging across Colorado. MOre than 900 firefighters were trying to control the blaze, according the AP.

The San Juan National Forest makes up some 1.8 million acres across nine counties. "We're not out of the woods by any means, but we've been very fortunate there have not been any homes burned or firefighters hurt".

The Buffalo Fire broke out Tuesday on a mountain near Silverthorne in Summit County, forcing the evacuation of more than 1,300 homes. People in the Lower Buffalo Mountain area, in about 1,100 units, have been placed on pre-evacuation notice.

The region, which is also home to Mesa Verde National Park, relies heavily on visitors to support its economy and fire managers have tried to help encourage them to keep coming by including links to tourism information in their regular fire updates.

Nearby, the Burro Fire has now grown to 2,829 acres with heavy fuels driving the fire growth and behavior. The red line around the 416 Fire was the perimeter at 10:12 a.m. MDT June 11.

"The fire grew extremely rapidly", Berino said.

County Fire Marshal Keith Clark says the idea is to reduce the likelihood of a human-caused fire.

Purdy said she was "frantic" as she placed belongings in the auto and left her home.

"It's going to come down to a point there, and that's what we're striving to achieve there, is to get that all nicely brought together", Knight said.

An overnight shelter has been opened for evacuees at Frisco Elementary School.

The communities of Mountain Home, Wold Tract, and Wycolo are under evacuation orders from Albany County officials.

Because of possible thunderstorms, that National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning this morning for the areas around the fires.

The city hasn't decided whether it will close either the foothills trails or the trails in the bosque.

"If it wasn't for the fire breaks put in place our neighborhood would have burnt down", Purdy tweeted.
