President Trump's nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court is viewed by many as a step toward throwing out Roe v. Wade, the ruling that protects a women's right to have an abortion.

According to this system, the only judge more conservative than Kavanaugh is Justice Clarence Thomas. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called him a "superb choice" who is well-qualified for the job. The official said Trump decided on Kavanaugh because of his large body of jurisprudence cited by other courts, describing him as a judge that other judges read.

Fallon, who is the executive director of Demand Justice, a new group that promotes progressive judicial nominees, said his organization has been working to persuade senators to oppose Kavanaugh's confirmation. "And I think it's going to be a attractive thing to watch over the next month".

"The right to access abortion safely and legally in this country is absolutely on the line", she said.

"I hope in the end when push comes to shove that (Kavanaugh) will have acquitted himself in a way that will allow all 50 of our Republican senators to be able to vote for him", Thune said.

The newfound urgency to fill Justice Kennedy's #SCOTUS seat from numerous same people who refused to even consider President Obama's nominee is transparent opportunism that represents everything Americans hate most about politics today.

It appears that if confirmed, Kavanaugh would be the least wealthy justice. Just as troubling, in light of the ongoing Russian Federation investigation, Judge Kavanaugh has expressed staunch opposition to criminal investigations of sitting Presidents. Like Trump's first nominee a year ago, Justice Neil Gorsuch, Kavanaugh would be a young addition who could help remake the court for decades to come with rulings that could restrict abortion, expand gun rights and roll back key parts of Obamacare.

"We have known this moment was coming, and so over a year we have been organizing in these Senate battleground states", she said, "knowing that these senators would be key to a confirmation battle".

Trump said in 2016 that he would use any Supreme Court nomination opportunities to appoint judges who would overturn Roe.

Kavanaugh is set to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy, who is retiring.

Already, in Missouri, Republican Attorney General Josh Hawley, who is challenging Democratic Sen.

She said that with Kavanaugh's credentials, "it's very hard for anyone to tell me that he's not qualified for the job". Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case.

Later, in a statement provide by her office, Frankel said: "The alarming reality is that we are on the precipice of five men taking us back to the days of coat-hanger medicine, when women were maimed and killed as a result of back alley abortions".
