Saudi Arabia said Sunday it was ordering Canada's ambassador to leave the country and freezing all new trade and investment transactions with Canada in a spat over human rights.

Harbash added that they are capable of transferring all Saudi students from Canada to countries with cultural missions in the US, UK, New Zealand and Australia, all of which are considered countries with top education institutions, and have good relations with Saudi Arabia.

The row erupted after Canada came out in support of human and women's rights and called on Saudi Arabia to release human rights activists arrested by Riyadh.

"In terms of Canada's position going forward, we stand absolutely - with great assuredness - stand by what we have said".

McTeague said the risk of Saudi Arabia causing gas prices to rise is minimal - even locally in New Brunswick - given the "very robust market" globally for crude and Irving Oil's allocation to the USA northeast. Saudi Arabia long has been sensitive to global pressure over the Raif Badawi sentence.

The British government on Tuesday urged Canada and Saudi Arabia to show restraint. "And of course, Irving sells most of its product into the United States, not Canada", he said.

Badawi, who is known for challenging Saudi Arabia's male guardianship system, is the recipient of the 2012 International Women of Courage Award.

"Canada does not understand its place and it tried to impose itself on the Kingdom's policies in its ministry of foreign affairs statement as if to place itself above other countries in the world", he said. Riyadh accused Ottawa on Tuesday of interfering in its internal affairs.

When asked about the contract, Freeland said the government "looks forward" to hearing from Riyadh about the future of the deal.

The airline's announcement comes amid newly surfaced tensions between Canada and Saudi Arabia triggered by Ottawa's criticism of detentions in the kingdom.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights estimates that at least 15 human rights defenders and women's rights activists critical of the Saudi government had been arrested or detained arbitrarily since 15 May.

Dan McTeague, a senior analyst at the fuel price tracking website GasBuddy, said any such disruption could easily be offset by alternative supply, as Saudi Arabia's oil continues to represent an increasingly small portion of Canada's crude imports.

"Some of these issues we choose to discuss privately with our friends, with our partners, with our allies", Nauert said.

Saint Mary's University estimated there are about 100 students from Saudi Arabia studying at their campus while there were 80 at Mount Saint Vincent during the winter semester.

Canadian Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland was quoted by Reuters as saying to reporters on Monday that "it would be a shame for those students if they are deprived of the opportunity to study here".
