Carabao Cup: Lampard's Derby stun mentor Mourinho's Man United

Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba is at the heart of controversy after the Red Devils' defeat to Derby.

In a move that was created to underline his authority, Mourinho stripped Pogba of the Manchester United vice-captaincy during a team meeting at Carrington yesterday and dropped him for the Carabao Cup tie against Derby County at Old Trafford, which the hosts lost on penalties.

On Monday, Pogba tried to downplay the issues with Mourinho, tweeting: "Some people make polemic even from "good morning" to create drama".

He was already in the English capital this week for The Best FIFA awards ceremony on Monday night, so it could also be the opportune time to cement his future employment plans. Despite Mourinho publicly stating that the stripping of vice-captaincy does not mean that the player will leave the club, their relationship has gone beyond repairable.

SI's Grant Wahl reported that Raiola had been offering Pogba up to big clubs in Europe, attempting to free him from Manchester United and Mourinho and indicating that Pogba wanted out.

"I knew we were going to be in trouble with Jones", said Mourinho in a barb at one of his own players.

Fresh from playing a pivotal role in France's World Cup success, Pogba, who cost United a then world record £89 million ($116 million) to bring back to the club from Juventus in 2016, has started to deliver on his price tag this season. To go down early at Old Trafford and play as well as they did was superb.

Derby's Harry Wilson, on loan from the Red Devils' arch-rivals Liverpool, canceled that out just before the hour before Jack Marriott scored what looked to have been an upset victor until the Belgian pulled the late goal back deep into injury time.

"Our increased revenue expectation for the year demonstrates our continued strong long-term financial performance which underpins everything we do and allows us to compete for top talent in an increasingly competitive transfer market", executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said in a statement.

It is unknown whether Pogba will return to Mourinho's starting line-up for the clash at the London Stadium.

"I had a mantra where I didn't like to speak too much because I made a few mistakes with things I said in younger days". "That is the attitude I like my teams to have in every match". Real Madrid have won three Champions Leagues.

Derby had been moments away from winning 2-1 in normal time after United keeper Sergio Romero was sent off in the 67th minute but Marouane Fellaini got a stoppage-time equaliser.
