Trump threatens to send military against immigrant 'onslaught'

As some 3,000 Hondurans made their way through Guatemala, attention - and pressure - turned to Mexico, after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to close the U.S. -Mexico border if authorities there fail to stop them - a almost unthinkable move that would disrupt hundreds of thousands of legal freight, vehicle and pedestrian crossings each day.

President Donald Trump on Thursday dusted off the cobwebs of an old proposal from April to deploy military troops along the southern US border in an effort to stem illegal crossings by immigrants. In April, the president did deploy the National Guard to assist at the border, a move previously done by both President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama.

Trump and several members of his Cabinet have made a series of major decisions on immigration-related policies that affect asylum-seekers, refugees, migrating families, and other immigrant categories. His successor is Lopez Obrador, who has been cooperative in trade talks between the USA and Mexico. "We will address every case", he said.

"Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras... we need to make sure that the root causes are solved".

Bartolo Fuentes, a former Honduran congressman, was arrested hours after Mr Trump tweeted on Tuesday: "The United States has strongly informed the President of Honduras that if the large Caravan of people heading to the U.S.is not stopped and brought back to Honduras, no more money or aid will be given to Honduras, effective immediately!"

"It's not in the interest of anybody to have those people make that trip", Gerónimo Gutiérrez, the Mexican ambassador to the United States, told Fox News, noting that "they're frequently tricked by human smuggling organizations".

In Mexico, authorities say that any immigrant who crosses the border illegally will be deported.

Migrants who have already arrived at the Mexican border have been sleeping in churches, fire stations and refugee shelters. The US sent more than $175m (£130m) to the country in 2016 and 2017, according to the US Agency for International Development.

Pompeo is scheduled to meet Fridaywith Peña Nieto and Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray, as well as Lopez Obrador's designated foreign minister, Marcelo Ebrard.

Manelich Castilla tells Milenio TV it is part of their plan to process the 3,000 some migrants who are trying to enter Mexico from Guatemala.

The migrants hope to enter Mexico and cross the country to reach the United States.

"Honestly, I want to get to the states to contribute to that country, to do any kind of work, picking up garbage", he said.

Arriving on the Mexican side of a border bridge, they were met by a phalanx of police with riot shields.

"The assault on our country at our Southern Border, including the Criminal elements and DRUGS pouring in, is far more important to me, as President, than Trade or the USMCA", Trump said, referring to the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

"It was predictable, and it's also very close to the election", he said.
