Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy to lead Republicans in Congress

Jordan, a founder of the conservative Freedom Caucus, is running for House minority leader in the new Congress against California Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the current majority leader and pick of the GOP establishment.

Rep. Kevin McCarthy was elected House minority leader Wednesday in a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, putting the California Republican in position to lead House GOP members after Speaker Paul Ryan leaves Capitol Hill at the end of his term in January.

As equality advocates celebrate a historic rise in the number of women elected to Congress in the 2018 midterms, the photos of the House of Representatives members-elect are casting light on the stark contrast in diversity between incoming Democrats and Republicans.

Mr. McCarthy, who trounced conservative challenger Rep. Jim Jordan of OH in the House leader's election, promised cooperation with Democrats - up to a point.

"Unless we want to keep on losing races then we ought to consider doing something different than what we've been doing", Perry said.

Ernst on Wednesday called her election to leadership "a great honor".

Also Wednesday, senators in both parties elected their leaders for the next session of Congress. Kentucky's Mitch McConnell will return as Republican majority leader while New York's Chuck Schumer will be back as Democratic minority leader.

Soon-to-be members of the House of Representatives elected in last week's midterm elections are now gathering in Washington, DC, for pre-freshman orientation. Ten House races have yet to be officially called.

Republicans are celebrating victories over Democratic Senate incumbents in Indiana, Missouri and possibly Florida, though the recount continues in the Sunshine State. John Cornyn of Texas, who was term-limited under conference rules.

McCarthy told reporters before the party elections that "we've got a plan" to counter Democrats in the next two years. "You stand up and defend the White House and the President", Jordan told CNN in a recent interview after being asked how House Republicans can counter a Democratic majority pursuing oversight of the President and the administration.

But Rep. Gary J. Palmer of Alabama, who was elected chairman of the Republican Policy Committee, said Republicans will serve in their role as the opposition.

McCarthy raised more than $60 million for Republicans this midterm cycle, more than any majority leader in history, and campaigned with 75 members of Congress and 22 candidates across 46 states, according to his staff. But since his election, he has changed course, saying instead the money must come from Congress and USA taxpayers.

Trump, who is close to McCarthy but also friendly with Jordan, largely stayed on the sidelines in the intraparty House contest. Running to fill the open seat of retiring Rep. Lamar Smith, a veteran Congressman regarded by science advocates as one of the most antiscience lawmakers in the House, Kopser lost by about three points.
