Packers fire coach Mike McCarthy after another loss

The Green Bay Packers announced Sunday they have parted ways with head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Green Bay Packers are now in the market for a new head coach following today's 20-17 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

That leaves the team 4-7-1 this season. "As a result, I made the hard decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately", Packers president Mark Murphy said in a statement. Joe Philbin will serve as the interim HC, but once the season wraps up, expect the Packers to go after a big-name guy to take over.

McCarthy, who helped lead the Packers to the Super Bowl in the 2010 season, has amassed a 125-76-2 as head coach in Green Bay. Of the starting five linemen on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers, only one, left guard Mike Iupati, was expected to be a starter this year. But Green Bay's offense had stagnated - as we noted recently the Packers were always going to have to make changes after this season.

And while Sunday's game won't fit in the all-time highlight film alongside the Cards' two recent playoff wins over the Packers, it was lovely on a dreary day during what had been a dreary season. "They came and told me I was going to be active, be up. We're not executing the right way", Rodgers said.

If that wasn't enough, Kumerow christened his first National Football League appearance with an 11-yard catch from Aaron Rodgers in the fourth quarter. I think it's a mistake.

Philbin coached the Dolphins from 2012-15, compiling a 24-28 record and getting fired after four games and a 1-3 record in 2015. They won the NFC North six times during his tenure and earned playoff spots every year except 2006, 2017 and presumably 2018. Is players' health not being vetted properly before they join the team?

McCarthy's job status was insecure for a while, but many expected him to at least last the season. But this time a year ago, Bengals fans were hearing reports Lewis wouldn't come back.
