Donald Trump aide accused of overruling security officials to clear administration staff

She added that rejections occurred due to a variety of reasons, including "foreign influence, conflicts of interest, concerning personal conduct, financial problems, drug use, and criminal conduct".

Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD), the chairman of the committee, said in a letter sent to White House Council Pat Cipollone that Newbold had detailed "grave breaches of national security at the highest levels of the Trump administration".

Newbold said that in the case of one official, named only as Senior White House Official 1, staff denied the security clearance request after a background investigation revealed "significant disqualifying factors, including foreign influence, outside activities. and personal conduct".

A White House whistle-blower has said the Trump administration overruled security experts to give questionable security clearances to more than two dozen people, including the president's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner.

"I would not be doing a service to myself, my country, or my children if I sat back knowing that the issues that we have could impact national security", the 18-year veteran of the executive branch said.

In response to Newbold's interview, Cummings is asking the White House to turn over the list she created as well as documents related to the handling of security clearances for several senior officials including Flynn, Kushner and Porter. I mean, really. What is next?

In his letter to the White House, Mr Cummings referred to three unnamed "senior White House officials" whose security clearance cases were addressed in some detail by Ms Newbold.

Flynn was forced out of the White House within weeks after questions were raised about his private discussions with Russia's U.S. ambassador, as well as other foreign business dealings.

'I've been on this committee 10 years, I've never seen anything like this, ' he noted.

According to Democrat Cummings's memo, however, Newbold considered the decisions to be part of a "systematic" problem within her office where the decisions of security clearance reviewers were "continuously" overridden.

"I disclosed all of my holdings for the Office of Government Ethics, and what I did with them is they told me what to divest, what to keep, what rules to follow".

A Democratic committee aide told Yahoo News that all nine of these officials were not necessarily among those who were initially denied clearances and said the records were being requested based on "previous public reporting" about issues with their clearances.

In a statement, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), the top Republican on the House Oversight Committee, accused Cummings of politicizing an issue that should be bipartisan.

Two of those people whose rejections were overturned are "senior White House officials" who remain in their jobs to this day, according to Ms Newbold. They said they will not comment on this because it is a security issue, at least not yet.

Is any of this evidence that any of the officials Trump granted clearances to via such waivers handed classified information over to hostile foreign powers?

"Chairman Cummings has departed from longstanding bipartisan oversight of the security clearance process to advance his partisan efforts to attack the president", Jordan said.
